Edinburgh Hotels
Ten years ago Edinburgh was just another provincial British city that awoke once a year for the Festival. How much has changed! Today it is one of the world's great weekend destinations. There is something for everyone in this city: from families with kids, youngsters looking for an exciting weekend, stag and hen parties, romantics and honeymooners... you name it. Of all Britain's cities, Edinburgh is the one that never seems to disappoint!
As a result hotels have a horrible way of booking up early and for such a small city there are so, so many of them. We have tried to sort through them a little and once again we are out and about trying to check them again, photograph them and generally provide you with a proper guide to what is available.

5 Star Edinburgh Hotels
It is hard to say which are our favourites. If you can stretch to the expense of a suite, the suites at Balmoral are pretty fine with views across to the castle. The smaller rooms are nothing like so exciting. Sheraton Hotel rooms are pretty much the same the world over: the spa however is not. If it is a spa weekend you want, the Sheraton is the place for . you. The Scotsman struggled at first but has now settled as the baronial slightly quirky scottish hotel with winding corridors and odd shaped rooms. The beds are sumptious, the food very good and the location excellent. Prestonfield is an oddity. Located on the edge of town it requires taxis to get in, but if you are looking for seductive and sexy: Prestonfield House is certainly the place. The tone is velvet and claret. Glasshouse labels itself as a boutique hotel and once had the field to itself, but now faces real competition from Le Monde, Tigerlily and Hudson as well as the older Bonham. Perched above the glass Omni Centre, all the rooms face onto a 2 acre rooftop garden and Calton Hill beyond. Like many boutique hotels, it lacks a little service, but makes up for it with big rooms and nice little touches. The Caledonian is a Hilton but is definately a cut above the typical executive hilton hotels that are dotted around the globe. Anchoring one end of Princes Street, it is huge and hugely popular with foreign visitors drawn to the allure of the name. The spa is good tho not a patch on the Sheraton's and it is now the unfashionable end of town.
There is also a choice of less expensive hotels within the city to suit individual budgets. There is also an excellent choice of palace hotels and country retreats outside the city such as Dalhousie Castle Hotel a few miles outside the centre.
Boutique Style Edinburgh Hotels
Not so long ago, boutique hotel meant nothing to most of us. For the cynical it the triumph of empty design over traditional hotel service. For others it offers a more distinctive and contemporary experience of the city. Edinburgh now has five or six boutique hotels worthy of the name. At the moment, Tigerlily is our personal favourite for its fab bar and sexy louche ambience. Le Monde seems to be suffering a bit of an identity crisis with staff and service under pressure. The experience is to stay in a different room each night for the fun of it. Hudson is less showy than the others and less glamorous. Glasshouse is more five star than the others and offers quieter service as well since it has not sweating bar beneath. Glasshouse is more for the 35+. Once Bonham was THE boutique hotel, but its deeply unsexy location in the West End and a lack of investment means it loses points with us. More businessman and his mistress than sexy boutique. Ricks is a favourite if only because it is so small and you would never know the rooms were there. Further out from town in Leith is Malmaison, the original boutique hotel group. Still every bit as good as before, but why stay here when you can be in the centre of town; that is the question. Perhaps most sumptious of all the boutiques are The Witchery and Prestonfield. The Witchery is the ultimate seduction scene, but I prefer Prestonfield if only for the feeling of velvet against bare skin!
4 Star Edinburgh Hotels
Channings has to be one of our favourite traditional 4 star hotels in Edinburgh - it's in a quieter part of town, but the staff and the service are both excellent, and the restaurant is superb. Price compare 30 sites for Channings Hotel in Edinburgh. Macdonald Holyrood is in a great location, close to the Scottish Parliament.
